Applying to AVID

AVID is currently offered for grades 9 to 12 students at Belmont and Royal Bay Secondary Schools.

"Typically, a successful applicant to AVID...

  • has a 2.0 to 3.5 GPA (C to A/B)—with a desire to do better.
  • demonstrated appropriate classroom behaviour.
  • has maintained good attendance.
  • is motivated to challenge him/herself.
  • has desire and potential to attend post-secondary education--whether that is university, college, or trades training.
  • has demonstrated a consistent work ethic.
  • may be first in the family to attend post-secondary.
  • may be experiencing a special circumstance.

Additionally, a student may be recommended by a teacher, counselor, or administrator.
"AVID is not...
  • a learning assistance or homework block
  • a remedial program
  • for students who suffer from consistently poor attendance

The application process for AVID is typically two parts: a written application and an interview. The online application button will direct you to a Google Forms to complete. If you prefer, paper/digital applications can be emailed to [email protected] or to your secondary school's AVID coordinator: Paul Bendall (Belmont) or John Froess (Royal Bay). An arrangement will then be made to conduct an informal interview with the applicant.
